ASDA revamped the Pre-Dental Simulation Course to focus on what makes Midwestern University unique. We wanted to ensure that the students not only got the opportunity to visit the campus, but to learn all of the intricacies that set Midwestern apart from every other dental school in the country. A two-day event was created to allow pre-dental students the opportunity to learn more about the admissions process and gain hands-on experiences that current dental students will have mastered by the end of their second year.
Dean Bradford Smith and Dr. James Pashayan opened the simulation course by welcoming students and sharing how to become a competitive student for Midwestern’s admission process. However, the main goal was to show them how accessible our faculty are to us at all times. A panel of current dental students then discussed their paths to dental school and why they chose Midwestern. The pre-dental students then participated in mock interviews, a tour of the clinic, admissions/personal statement help, and then impressions and stone model pour-ups. The final event of the day was a dental laser seminar where they were introduced to the different lasers that are used in the clinic and saw demonstrations on a pig jaw involving a soft tissue biopsy and a gingivectomy. The second day of the simulation course focused on hands-on activities ranging from Bicon implant placement, CAD/CAM scanning, and endodontic treatment. To wrap up the day, the students performed Class I preparations and composite restorations. We hope that in the future we can continue improving the pre-dental simulation course to increase the participation of students from all over the country.
