If we don’t speak now, we can’t complain later.
“Don’t wait until it hurts.” We give this advice to our patients every day, but how often do we take our own advice? The Committee on Political Affairs seeks to educate students on legislation which affects dentists at both a state and national. From issues we are concerned about now like student loans, to issues we should always be paying attention to such as access to care, it is important to stay informed.
Dental Care for Pregnant Women
We lobbied to have a dental benefit for pregnant women added to state AHCCCS plans.
Direct Primary Care Providers
We lobbied to allow dentists to legally offer their own membership plans to patients, which will help them offer to patients more attractive financing options.
Virtual Credit Cards
Many insurance companies have begun reimbursing dentists with pre-loaded virtual credit cards. These card numbers must be manually typed-in to credit card machines, which have associated processing fees. We lobbied to make mandatory the receiving of a check if a dentist prefers it.
The ADA has been trying to have the McCarren-Ferguson Act repealed for years. As it currently stands, the act allows dental insurers to legally collude with each other over reimbursement rates and practices, which leaves dentists with lower reimbursement rates and fewer options.
Student Loan Issues
We lobbied for several bills that would make loan terms more favorable for students, including some that would allow us to more easily refinance our loans and to stop the accrual of interest if we go on to pursue more graduate studies.
Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (ELSA)
This act would allow young patients with cleft lips and pallets to receive care for their conditions by categorizing the procedure as medically necessary instead of cosmetic.
