If we don’t speak now, we can’t complain later.
“Don’t wait until it hurts.” We give this advice to our patients every day, but how often do we take our own advice? The Committee on Political Affairs seeks to educate students on legislation which affects dentists at both a state and national. From issues we are concerned about now like student loans, to issues we should always be paying attention to such as access to care, it is important to stay informed.
Dental Student Debt
According to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), the average debt per graduating senior is $261,149. This high level of debt can jeopardize a new dentist’s ability to choose their preferred career path.
Due to barriers to care issues, midlevel provider pilot programs have begun to enter the mainstream world of dental health care. Does that mean they can perform irreversible procedures on the public?
The current system of licensure exams has been controversial. According to the American Dental Education Association, “ethical and practical questions about the use of human subjects, regional variations in examinations and results, and the reliability and validity of the exams have been some of the sources of concern.”
Dentistry and the Affordable Care Act
President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) on March 23, 2010. The law is intended to lower the cost of health care and coverage for all Americans and to give more rights to help insured patients. Read about the benefits of the Affordable Care Act as described by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Any effects on dentists?
Barriers to Care
Barriers to care include anything that limits or prevents people from receiving adequate health care. As of June 19, 2014, there were 4,900 Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA). It would take 7,300 additional practitioners to meet every HPSA community’s need for dental providers.
