Ways to help
Super Sealant Saturday
Super Sealant Saturday is the pinnacle of our school’s commitment to community service. It is held at Midwestern University’s Dental Clinic every October. Under the supervision of volunteer faculty, children from around the community come to receive free cleanings, exams, and molar sealants from dental student volunteers. At the 2016 event, Midwestern students performed 865 procedures and provided over $20,000 worth of free dental care to 136 children.
Arizona Community Dental Clinic (ACDC)
The Arizona Community Dental Clinic was organized by volunteer dentists of the Arizona Dental Foundation and set up in a former hygiene school in downtown Phoenix. One Saturday per month, sixteen dental students volunteer at the Arizona Community Dental Clinic to provide dental care to patients at reduced fees. Students perform cleanings, restorative treatments, and surgical procedures under the supervision of Midwestern faculty and volunteer community dentists.
Veterans Dental Care Day
In partnership with Aspen Dental, students and faculty volunteer alongside Aspen staff and doctors to provide free dental treatment to veterans in the Phoenix community. Students identify the patient’s needs and perform extractions and restorations at a local Aspen Dental location. With the help of Aspen’s lab technicians, students are able to deliver full and partial dentures to the veterans at the event. At the December 3, 2016 event, over $23,000 worth of free dental care was provided to 29 veterans.
Give Kids a Smile
Give Kids a Smile is held annually at Midwestern University’s Dental Institute. Children and pre-screened by students to determine their treatment needs. At a later date, children come back to Midwestern for their treatment and receive anything from stainless steel crowns and direct restorations to cleanings and sealants, all performed by students.
Barriers to care include anything that limits or prevents people from receiving adequate health care. As of June 19, 2014, there were 4,900 Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA). It would take 7,300 additional practitioners to meet every HPSA community’s need for dental providers. In October 2018, Midwestern students provided $19,869 worth of free dental care to 167 children.
